4/1/2020 The canyon is generally quite level but has some downward steps of a few feet - these increase in height towards the river. Several have pools beyond, with water that may be 2-3 feet deep. Not far above the confluence, the streambed drops by 10 feet and a rope is needed to continue; an iron peg is driven into the rocks as a belay point to assist when climbing down. However, there are more canyons in Big Bend that are either ignored or unknown. Over the years I have found a few off the beaten path canyons to explore. One of which I cover in this blog as the Secret Canyon and which I refer to as the 1819 Canyon. Well this year I found another neat little canyon. This one was somewhat of a slot canyon. Rather more interesting is the 3.5 mile trail to Devil's Den in the mountain foothills a little way south; the Den is a narrow, enclosed, sheer-walled ravine through whitish limestone strata, containing pour-offs, potholes and terraces - like a slot canyon though not quite as narrow. 21 May 2017 Big Bend National Park is amazing in that if you get tired of the desert, you Canyon, was easily accessible and I always love a slot canyon.
