4/1/2020 The canyon is generally quite level but has some downward steps of a few feet - these increase in height towards the river. Several have pools beyond, with water that may be 2-3 feet deep. Not far above the confluence, the streambed drops by 10 feet and a rope is needed to continue; an iron peg is driven into the rocks as a belay point to assist when climbing down. However, there are more canyons in Big Bend that are either ignored or unknown. Over the years I have found a few off the beaten path canyons to explore. One of which I cover in this blog as the Secret Canyon and which I refer to as the 1819 Canyon. Well this year I found another neat little canyon. This one was somewhat of a slot canyon. Rather more interesting is the 3.5 mile trail to Devil's Den in the mountain foothills a little way south; the Den is a narrow, enclosed, sheer-walled ravine through whitish limestone strata, containing pour-offs, potholes and terraces - like a slot canyon though not quite as narrow.
